Our Projects

The researchers at the Center for the Study of Young Drivers are leading experts on the issue of teen driver safety. They helped to implement North Carolina’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system, one of the first GDL systems in the nation. Several years ago, they conducted a first-of-its-kind study using in-vehicle cameras to examine how parents supervise their teens during the learner phase of GDL. They have evaluated North Carolina’s passenger restriction, supervised hours requirement, and cell phone restriction for teen drivers. Recently, team members have evaluated an advanced driver training program in partnership with the Orange County Traffic Court. Over the years, the Center has been at the forefront of research on young driver safety. To see a list of previous and current studies, please click on the topics on the right-hand bar.
